Connie Hill Johnson: Prepare for the Role Reversal
Thursday Nov 21, 2019
Thursday Nov 21, 2019
What does your parents’ health have to do with Redefining Wealth? Well, more than you might think. You see, if you’re like many of us in the “sandwich generation” – the place where you’re raising children while also caring for your parents – then you know your parents’ health can affect your lifestyle and financial independence just as much as it does theirs.
Now, this has been something I’ve experienced myself, and it’s something Connie Hill Johnson, owner of a Visiting Angles franchise in Cleveland, Ohio, witnesses on a day-to-day basis. As you might imagine, she gets a front-row seat to the challenges senior citizens face and the struggles their caretakers and families battle with when things like long-term care, power of attorney and last rites aren’t discussed or prepared for in advance.
Tune in as Connie shares critical steps in preparing for your parents’ future care. We cover everything from how to start the role reversal conversation to getting your siblings on the same page. We also talk about preparing your finances so caring for your parents doesn’t end up being a burden. Connie also shares several eye-opening ways to have the conversation (even when your parents don’t want to talk).
This episode is brought to you by Purpose 2 Platform, a 20-week business accelerator and mentorship program that will get you clear on HOW to package your PURPOSE, communicate your PROMISE to your ideal audience, choose the best PLATFORM for your personality and lifestyle and create a PREMIUM offer.
Through this program, you’ll receive accountability and support in a dynamic community designed so you can finally make progress and be ready before you even need to pull that trigger on what’s no longer serving you.

Spiritual Malnutrition: Are You Choosing to Starve?
Thursday Nov 14, 2019
Thursday Nov 14, 2019
What are you feeding your spirit? Seriously, what are we putting into our bodies that’s positioning us to actually get what we say we want? The Holy Spirit placed so many lessons on my heart as I was locked away in a hotel room, snacking and working on my next book. It was like a blaring alarm went off, and at that moment, I realized I wasn’t just snacking physically. I was snacking spiritually, too.
You see, I’d do some drive-by faith by getting in a devotional here or there. Vibe to some gospel music at the gym or drop a “preach, sis, preach” on a faith-based meme on social media, all the while convincing myself it was enough. But the truth is, I was snacking. And if snacking alone is not enough to nourish our bodies, how is it ever enough to feed our spirits? It’s not.
I want you to know spiritual malnutrition is a serious condition that will leave you ready to pop off over insignificant things and incapable of living in the fullness of what you’re asking for, among other things. That’s why we must choose to make time to nourish our spirits on a daily basis.
Now, have you ever thought to yourself, “I just need more hours in the day?” I know I have, so when I meet women with full lives and full plates who seem to do SO MUCH with joy, peace, style, grace and ease, I'm always quick to ask them the secret.
When I met, Tina Black, a Paul Mitchell school owner, salon owner, author, podcaster, wife and mother how she does it all, she reminded me, “It's not about time management, it's about priority management.”
Tina doesn't believe in letting life just happen, she believes in planning. She created BE A PLANNER to help us all get ready for our best decade ever!
Be a Planner teaches you how to plan your quarter, month, week and day down to a tee. It helps you think through what you should be doing versus what you should be delegating.
Success Leaves Clues, Purpose Chasers, and for just $30 for a year-long planner, I'm willing to see how much of what has helped Tina create her amazing success can be applied to my life for sure.
To pick up your copy of “Be A Planner,” head to TinaBlack.net/SHOP. And let’s plan our way into a purposeful 2020 and beyond.
Nourishing your spirit surely deserves a bullet on your daily to-do list just as much as the other things in your life, so plan it into your day.
Spiritual Takeaways
You can’t outwork a bad spiritual diet.
There’s no need in wishing, hoping and praying for things you’re not spiritually strong enough to accept, embrace, hold, maintain and sustain.
Faith is about believing in something greater, so if you say you believe in something, then you must make time to practice it.
Don’t get so far it this wealth-building, business-building, brand-building and people-pleasing that now you think you can snack your way to spiritual victory.
Spirituality is not a one-size-fits-forever thing. What you feed your spirit today may not be enough to nourish the vision that God has for you tomorrow.
Let us know your biggest takeaway from this episode in the comments section. What changes are you willing to make to your spiritual diet?

About Brandi Harvey
Brandi believes our personal freedom lies beyond the edges of our limits so we should eat well, give a and move our bodies daily. Committed to teaching women how to care for and preserve their mind, body and spirit, she understands that women are pushed to the limit in their careers, family and everyday lives. Therefore, the need for women to restore themselves by creating daily rituals and spiritual practices is vital.
As a former high school educator and executive director to the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, Brandi spent the majority of her career serving children and families within the United States and around the globe. Answering her life calling as a wellness teacher, Brandi launched Beyond Her – a holistic lifestyle brand helping women of color reconnect to their internal power to heal and transform their mind, body and spirit.
The Process of Healing
In order to write Breakthrough Sold Separately, Brandi had to go through the process of healing herself first. She had to uncover the things she’d suppressed for years, and then get over the shame she had around being the daughter of a mega-star and still having things to deal with and heal from.
Tune into the podcast to hear about Brandi’s realization and how she was able to heal.
The Backstory on Breakthrough Sold Separately
Brandi opens the book by talking about her father, Steve Harvey, releasing her from her position as Executive Director of the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation.
And I asked her if before that happened she’d been in what I’d call a boat of mediocrity.
She said this:
“I was. I knew that I didn’t want to be there. You know what it’s like when you don’t want to be doing something, right? You’re planning trips while at work, you’ve got Amazon open and you’re doing everything that’s not your job.”
Brandi then recalled how she had lost the spark she’d once had for the role and knew it was time to leave.
“I was stuck in a position that was not my vision. It was somebody else’s vision, and I knew God was calling me higher.” – Brandi Harvey
Now, Brandi also spoke candidly about how she received notice that she’d been fired. Listen now so you can hear all about it in her words.
The Mountaintop Experience
After receiving notice that she’d been terminated, Brandi didn’t know what she was going to do, but thought it might be time to write a book.
“I was stuck on what to write about,” Brandi said, “and thought my breakthrough would come with a cocktail on the beach. God had other plans, and instead of the beach, I ended up in Boone, North Carolina on a silent retreat.”
After five days in silence, Brandi emerged with a eureka moment and realized it wasn’t just about writing a book – well, yes, that was part of it – but there was more God was calling her to do.
The Process of Transformation
“So often we attach ourselves to positions because we want to be validated by people.” – Brandi Harvey
For years, Brandi didn’t have a close relationship with her father. Instead, she was clinging to her position because it provided a closeness she thought she needed.
“Me being fired,” she says, “was the best thing that could have happened for our relationship because it freed me from the need to want him to accept me. When I was working for him, I kept trying to prove myself, thinking that if I could win him over, he’d love me more.”
“I had to learn that I had to start showing up for myself.” – Brandi Harvey
The thing is this: We owe ourselves silence because through silence our goals become clear. And when we’re clear on our purpose and what we’re here to do, everything shifts. When we surrender, all bets are off, and we do what we’re here to do.

About Marshawn Evans Daniels
Marshawn Evans Daniels is a Reinvention Strategist, Influence Expert and Best-Selling Author known as The Godfidence® Coach.
A master in teaching the art of manifestation, this former Sports Attorney, Miss America Finalist and Donald Trump Apprentice, left her full-time job as a stuffy big-firm lawyer and turned her passion for people into a multimillion-dollar enterprise just a few years ago. She helps emerging and established women influencers of faith to Believe Bigger, Live Bigger and Profit Bigger so they can ultimately Give Bigger.
Marshawn is the best-selling author of BELIEVE BIGGER: Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose.
Believe Bigger: Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose
Six days before Marshawn’s wedding, she found out that her fiancé was cheating on her. A woman who had built a successful multiple 7-figure business, who had been a Miss America finalist, who had starred on The Apprentice, found herself at rock bottom. And it was in that moment – what Marshawn calls a split rock moment –she realized things had to change.
First, she called off the wedding. Then she asked God, “Why did this happen to me?” And he replied, “Because you’re going to be able to change the lives of women like never before.”
Tune in to the podcast to hear what Marshawn said in response to this.
Through this experience, Marshawn discovered her superpower is in helping women step into their purpose and to believe BIG (Built In God).
“It is impossible for a woman to step into her destiny without being in alignment in the presence of other women.” – Marshawn Evans Daniels
God Has Prepared a Future Version of You
“God prepares before he provides. He gets things and us ready for that new reality and he doesn’t call us prematurely.” – Marshawn Evans Daniels
So what happens when we think we’re believing bigger but we’re actually moving before our time because we haven’t taken the time to do the work?
According to Marshawn, God matures you before he moves you into your next season. Many times, we think he’s delaying, but he’s really developing, and some of the delay is our lack of willingness to submit to the development.
Many of us out there are what you’d call purpose chasers – we have a message and a mission and want to share it with the world. When we’re called, that’s just the beginning. The assignment comes with development. It comes with work. It comes with having a launch where nobody buys anything. It comes with losing – and that’s when people give up.
How to Transition From Believing Bigger to Living Bigger
When it comes to living bigger, how do you know when you’re actually living bigger?
Oftentimes, we compete and compare ourselves with other people’s version of living bigger and end up stuck. Marshawn calls this the gap. It’s the middle space between our comfort zone and our glory zone, and a lot of people end up there and don’t realize it.
“Gappers,” she says, “talk about what God is going to do all the time. But that’s it, nothing ever changes. They think that just being anointed is enough and it’s not.”
Listen to the podcast and learn the three main things that keep people in the gap and what you can do to move out of the gap if you’re one of them.
How has Believe Bigger changed your life? Please share with us and let us know your biggest takeaways.

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: The Truth About Therapy
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
Last week we touched on mental illness, and this week we’re talking about mental health and how to preserve it because it really is so critical to your overall well-being. Mental health plays a part in your relationships, finances and wealth, and in your faith too. It’s also part of the first pillar of Redefining Wealth.
Typically when I talk about the FIT pillar, people assume I’m talking about being physically fit, and although that is a part of the pillar, being mentally fit is often more important.
In today’s episode, I sit down with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, founder of Therapy for Black Girls and a licensed psychologist in Atlanta, as we unpack mental health. Here, we discuss the basics of mental health and when it’s best to see a therapist and what you can expect from the experience.
You'll have accountability and support in a dynamic community so you can finally make progress and be ready before you even need to pull that trigger on what's no longer serving you. Book a Breakthrough Call today at Purpose 2 Platform.com.
About Dr. Joy Harden Bradford
Dr. Joy is a licensed psychologist in the state of Georgia. Her specialty includes working with Black women in both individual and couples counseling. Her primary areas of interest include break-up and divorce recovery, depression, work-life balance, relationship skills and self-esteem improvement.
She also has considerable knowledge in working with undergraduate and graduate students in areas including procrastination, stress management, dissertation/thesis support and career development.
Dr. Joy created Therapy for Black Girls as an online space dedicated to encouraging the mental wellness of Black women and girls. So often the stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevent Black women from taking the step of seeing a therapist. As such, Dr. Joy developed the space to present mental health topics in a way that feels more accessible and relevant.
What Is Mental Health?
Mental health is comparable to our physical health – it’s something we all have. So when we get check-ups, have blood work done, exercise and eat right, we’re doing things to take care of ourselves physically. Mental health, on the other hand, often gets forgotten because many people don’t realize that it’s also something they need to take care of.
“Mental health encompasses our emotions and how we experience things. It often feels intangible, but is very important in our lives.” – Dr. Joy
Historically, the African American culture has been one where you couldn’t or shouldn’t share certain types of information with other people. Reasoning for this often meant it was for survival purposes or for life, work or social opportunities in business or in the community.
And while it made sense back then, now we’ve come to realize that leaving things bottled up inside is not healthy.
Having said that, therapy is still difficult for a lot of people. People still struggle with the idea of sharing about their childhood and family and that’s often because they’ve been raised to not talk about those things.
What is Mental Illness?
Mental illness is a diagnosed psychiatric condition. This can be any conditions such as a major depressive disorder, an anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. With any of these there are a specific set of symptoms that impact your life in significant ways – that’s why they’re classified as a mental illness.
Therapy for general things, however, is usually not a full-blown mental illness. So if you’re feeling anxious about a new job or an upcoming interview that’s not necessarily an anxiety disorder.
Another example is if you want to be more assertive in your relationships, again, not necessarily a mental illness, but something you can certainly see a therapist for.
Is It Time to Find a Therapist?
Therapy is useful when dealing with life issues – from anxiety about a new job to how you show up or want to show up in your relationships. So how do you know when it’s the right time to talk to a therapist versus praying or talking to your girlfriends?
According to Dr. Joy, there’s nothing wrong with praying, talking to your girlfriends and talking to a therapist. Usually though, many people put off talking with a therapist because they think therapy is something you only do in a crisis.
But the reality is you can be talking with a therapist long before any crisis happens.
“Therapy isn’t always for a crisis. Oftentimes, if you talk to a therapist in those early stages, you can prevent something from escalating.” – Dr. Joy
So, are you doing yourself a disservice by not making therapy a part of your lifestyle? Tune in to the podcast to find out with Dr. Joy says.
How to Choose the Right Therapist
According to Dr. Joy, the “right therapist” is someone you feel comfortable discussing personal, often private topics with. These are sometimes things you haven’t ever shared with anyone – not your mother, spouse or best friends. So it’s going to be very important for you to trust the person with that information.
You also want to make sure to find someone who has specific expertise in working with the condition or concern you’re coming to them with. For instance, if you have an eating disorder, you’d want to look for someone who has expertise in that area or someone who has done additional training in eating disorders. This way you know you’re going to someone who has the best chance of treating you.
“At its core, a therapeutic relationship is like any other relationship in your life, except that you’re not hanging out after the session.” – Dr. Joy
Now, Dr. Joy shared some eye-opening insight about finding the right therapist that you’ll have to tune in to catch, but in the meantime, I’ll leave you with this valuable nugget:
When choosing a therapist, the biggest thing is feeling 100% comfortable and being able to trust them.
If you think you need support or you have questions about therapy, please visit Dr. Joy’s site, Therapy for Black Girls – it’s an incredible resource.

T-Kea Blackman: Success Doesn’t Make You Exempt
Thursday Oct 17, 2019
Thursday Oct 17, 2019
Mental health, like money, is often a taboo topic. It’s also a topic that has terminology associated with it that’s usually used incorrectly, namely equating mental health with mental illness and sadness with depression. In fact, many of us equate sadness with depression, but the truth is they’re very different.
In today’s episode, I sit down with T-Kea Blackman author of Saved & Depressed: A Suicide Survivor’s Journey of Mental Health, Healing & Faith and owner of Fireflies Unite, a mental health media and communications company. T-Kea and I go deep into the topic of mental health. We cover everything from T-Kea’s own struggle with depression and her attempted suicide to society’s understanding of mental health.
This episode is brought to you by my signature program, Purpose to Platform, the most comprehensive online business accelerator for authentic, spirit-led + purpose-driven entrepreneurs. Apply to work with me HERE and let’s get you clear on who you serve, why you chose them, what’s the best platform for you to shine like the rockstar you are and how to bring it altogether so you can charge premium prices for purposeful work.
About T-Kea Blackman
T-Kea Blackman, MPS (also known as Kea) is a mental health advocate, speaker and author. She is the owner of Fireflies Unite, a mental health media and communications company.
She is also the creator and host of the Fireflies Unite Podcast, a weekly podcast dedicated to bringing light into darkness–just like fireflies–by sharing the stories of individuals with mental illness who are thriving within communities of color despite the disadvantages and racism that negatively impacts their mental health.
Described as an inspiration, her heartfelt and powerful story is a testament that anyone can thrive despite having a mental illness. T-Kea was diagnosed with major depression and generalized anxiety disorders and is a suicide survivor. She previously worked in the television industry as a publicist and production/talent coordinator.
Within her career, she provided support to TV One’s signature award-winning shows Unsung and Unsung Hollywood, BET’s Black Girls Rock!, The Soul Train Awards and BET X Youth Experience. Her diagnosis led her to use her communications and media skills to raise awareness for mental illness within communities of color.
T-Kea wrote her first book, Saved & Depression: A Suicide Survivor’s Journey Of Mental Health, Healing, & Faith to educate her community on mental health, as well it encourages them to seek treatment.
To follow T-Kea’s journey and listen to her podcast, visit www.firefliesunite.com and connect with her @firefliespod on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Saved & Depressed: T-Kea’s Journey
In T-Kea’s book she talks specifically about her own mental health, her healing process and her faith. One of the questions she asked herself while in the psychiatric unit of a hospital following her attempted suicide is:
“How does someone with an apartment, a car, two college degrees and a promising career end up in a place she was told was for crazy people?”
T-Kea believed the people who ended up needing psychiatric care were people who were homeless, who talked to themselves and who were in disarray. She didn’t know there could actually be something going on internally with these people and ultimately with herself.
In fact, she remembers saying to one of the nurses, “I don’t belong here.” And the nurse replied, “You’re here because your brain is sick. Just like you would go to a cardiologist if you were having issues with your heart. Right now, you’re here because your brain is sick and we’re working to figure out how to help you move forward.”
Even T-Kea’s aunt told her she didn’t belong there with “those people,” and I’m sure many of us would tell someone the same thing in an effort to be helpful and to encourage them to “snap out of it.”
But the truth is … it’s deeper than that.
“High achieving doesn’t mean you can’t have poor mental health.” – T-Kea Blackman
The Difference Between Mental Health and Mental Illness
We all have mental health. The problem is, a lot of people use the terms “mental health” and “mental illness” interchangeability and distort what each actually means.
So if you ask someone, “How’s your mental health?” There’s a good chance they’ll get offended. But everyone has mental health.
“A lot of times people assume if they have mental health – good or bad – they have issues, but that’s not true.” – T-Kea Blackman
We all have mental health, just like we all have physical health. Mental health is a person’s condition in connection to their emotional and psychological state. So you can have good mental health where everything is great or you can have poor mental health where things like low self-esteem and depression start to creep in.
When poor mental health goes untreated, it can develop into a mental illness such as depressive disorder or bipolar disorder or even in extreme cases, schizophrenia. The biggest thing with a mental illness is it will destroy your ability to function at your maximum capacity.
Depression Is Not A Synonym for Sadness
This is another place where we use the words depression and sadness interchangeability and incorrectly. One of the things T-Kea covers in her book is how debilitating it is when you’re in a depressive episode and how some people perceive you as being lazy or they say, “You’re just sad” or “You just need to push through this.”
“When people use depression and sadness interchangeability, it minimizes the severity of depression and can cause more damage to a person.” – T-Kea Blackman
When you don’t have enough money to get your car fixed, you’re sad or bummed out about it – this is an example of sadness. But when you find the money to get your car fixed, you’re usually fine.
In other words, with sadness, it tends to fade away once the situation gets better. But with depression, there’s a lingering sadness that actually never leaves – like a dark cloud that follows you everywhere. The other thing with depression is there’s often a loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy.
“If we understand that depression is truly a disability, we can have a greater level of compassion for those suffering from it.” – Patrice Washington
You can’t always see someone’s mental health just by looking at them. In fact, oftentimes, it’s the high-achieving, high-functioning, people who have poor mental health or are struggling with a mental illness. It’s for that reason we need to show compassion for those struggling and really offer support instead of judgement.
Now, I’d love to hear about your experience with mental health. How do you see mental health in society? Do you agree that the majority of people use depression and sadness incorrectly? Please let me know in the comments below.

Kachelle Kelly: Infusing Faith In Business
Thursday Oct 10, 2019
Thursday Oct 10, 2019
When it comes to incorporating faith into their business, many business owners shy away from it, and not because they aren’t spiritual. But because, in many cases, they’re afraid to offend people who don’t share their beliefs.
I’ve had that fear. People have even told me to tone down the “God talk.” But God is an integral part of my business and my life, and to ignore Him and my faith wouldn’t be right. It also wouldn’t be of service to my business.
In today’s episode, I sit down with Kachelle Kelly, author of Boss Women Pray and Boss Men Pray, and we talk specifically about how to infuse faith into your business and not feel like you’re pressuring others to believe what you believe.
This episode is brought to you by The Courage Circle, a community of women committed to growing BOLDER in their faith so we have the confidence and courage to go after EVERYTHING God said we could have! JOIN TODAY for bible studies, devotionals and a special limited offer. Sign up today at thecouragecircle.com.
About Kachelle Kelly
Kachelle is a transformational speaker, author, corporate trainer, serial entrepreneur and thought provoker dedicated to changing the world one mindset at a time. She was able to successfully introduce the idea of merging faith and business in the world’s first prayer guide for entrepreneurs and corporate leaders, Boss Women Pray and Boss Men Pray, which created an international movement.
Even with the success of those book, Kachelle is most proud of her book Boss Kids Pray: ABC’s Prayers for a Child’s Life, featuring power words and prayers to cultivate children in today’s culture.
Kachelle has been featured in Entrepreneur, Black Enterprise and Sister 2 Sister Magazine. She, and the entire Boss Pray movement, also received recognition in her Houston, Texas hometown where she was is now the first female in the personal and professional development field to be awarded her own day.
Boss Women Pray
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” – 3 John 1:2
This verse has been one of my guiding scriptures since January 1, 2006. So when I opened up Kachelle’s book Boss Women Pray and saw it, I knew the book was going to be incredible – and it is.
As a woman of faith and someone who incorporates God into her business, I’m always surprised when I meet people who are equally surprised that I incorporate faith into my business. They say things like, “Oh my gosh, you’re so bold” or “I can’t believe you did that – I could never do that.” And I’m genuinely curious about why people shun the idea of incorporating faith into their business.
For Kachelle, she thought it was going to be career suicide to even write Boss Women Pray because no one was mixing business and faith. After all, she didn’t want to offend anybody or assume everybody was Christian, and yet she wanted to be authentic and genuine to herself and her beliefs.
“I didn’t want to write a book. I simply wanted to read a book like Boss Women Pray and I couldn’t find anything similar to it.” – Kachelle Kelly
After Kachelle searched and searched and couldn’t find anything like what she wanted, she heard God whisper, “When you can’t find something you create it.”
Obedience to God
“Be obedient and God will give you everything you need.” – Kachelle Kelly
For many people, they hear God but then immediately question what they heard or question themselves and then don’t do it. These are the people who know they want to write a book, but then take seven years to write it or don’t write it at all.
Kachelle wrote Boss Women Pray and Boss Men Pray in seven days. As soon as she heard God whisper, “When you can’t find something you create it,” she knew this was her assignment and she got to work. She’d didn’t question Him or her ability.
Instead, she got clear on what she wanted this book to be, mapped out each section and meditated on scripture. She asked questions like, “If I was starting a business today, where would I start? Where would I end up? What would be my problems?” And then wrote the content around those things.
“I was afraid, but I chose to be obedient because when you hear God, you go – you take action.” – Kachelle Kelly
Excerpt from Boss Women Pray
When I was looking to completely shift my team, I kept going back to Day 21: Prayer for Partners and Staff. This prayer allowed me to get clear and intentional about who I wanted to go with me to the next level.
Now, you must tune in to this week’s podcast to hear me read this powerful, clarity-inducing prayer.
I turn to it time and time again, and I will continue to use it as we keep growing the Redefining Wealth team.
Many people are conditioned to pray when something is wrong. Kachelle’s book teaches us that it’s okay to pray specifically for our business. God is concerned about everything that concerns us. So it makes sense that he’d be concerned about our business.
“We box God in and think he’s there only to keep us safe or protected or to give us peace. What we don’t understand is he’s there for everything.” – Kachelle Kelly
How is your relationship with God? Do you share your business concerns with him? Have you been called to do something and it’s still a to-do on your list? I’d love to know in the comments below.

Thursday Oct 03, 2019

When it comes to the FIT Pillar of Redefining Wealth, it’s all about becoming your best self. It’s not about being the skinniest person in the room; instead, it’s about being the healthiest – both physically and mentally.
One of the things we talk about a lot is that many people have a vision for their life, but they aren’t protecting the vessel that’s needed to execute that vision. In today’s episode, I sit down with Brandi Harvey – owner of Beyond Her, a holistic lifestyle brand helping women of color reconnect to their internal power to heal and transform their mind, body and spirit.

About Brandi Harvey
Brandi believes our personal freedom lies beyond the edges of our limits and so we should eat well, give a and move our bodies daily. Committed to teaching women how to care for and preserve their mind, body and spirit, Brandi understands women are pushed to the limit in their careers, family and everyday lives. Therefore, the need for women to restore themselves by creating daily rituals and spiritual practices is vital.
As a former high school educator and executive director to the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, Brandi spent the majority of her career serving children and families within the United States and around the globe.
Answering her life calling as a wellness teacher, Brandi launched Beyond Her – a holistic lifestyle brand helping women of color reconnect to their internal power so they can heal and transform their mind, body and spirit.
Brandi Harvey is a renaissance woman who believes the stakes of life are high., meaning we might as well bet on ourselves and play to win.
Seeing Myself Become My Best Self
Brandi’s journey into health began when she went home for spring break her sophomore year of college. When she was home, her dad loving called her his “fluffy girl.” She remembers thinking, “What does fluffy mean?” And realized that it meant fat, overweight … you know the drill.
When she got back to college, something clicked in her and she started working out. In the beginning though, Brandi worked out like so many of us do – she’d work out for 45 minutes and then reward herself with a treat, like a milkshake.
Eventually, Brandi started to correct this and started removing “unnecessary” things from her diet. Over time, she became vegan, and then became a spin instructor, then a certified trainer, and then a fitness competitor.
To Brandi, her dad calling her “fluffy” wasn’t damaging to her self-esteem. Instead, it awakened the giant within.
“Everybody has a giant inside of them. It just takes a nudge or a word for it to wake up. That’s what the word ‘fluffy’ was for me.” – Brandi Harvey
Brandi says, “At first, I wanted my father’s approval and for him to say I wasn’t fluffy. But then I realized, No, I want to be healthy and I want to live my life to the highest, fullest potential I possibly can.”
That word and her decision have set Brandi on a path that’s taught her how to heal herself. Since then, she’s learned how to heal her body, mind and spirit, and says she’s in better health now at 35 than she was at 15.
You Only Get One Body
For many people, they’re like Brandi was in the beginning – they need a reward for working to earn something.
But here’s the thing, you get one body – that’s it.
God has blessed you with one temple to take care of. For many of us, when we hear the idea of our body as being a temple, and we equate it to . You know, “Be careful who you sleep with because your body is a temple.” You’ve probably heard that before or, “Don’t drink or smoke because your body is a temple.”
But what we put into our body and how we maintain and care for our temple is equally as important, and it’s usually something that’s not talked about.
Think about it like this, every Sunday after church, there’s either a bake sale, coffee hour or some type of non-healthy meal, right? Yet in church we’re praying for healing of our bodies, minds and aliments, and then the next thing we do is put into our bodies, the same that’s killing us.
In other words, we’re praying for God to help us with our hypertension or diabetes or cancer – all preventable things – but then we don’t take the preventable measures because to do that requires us to do something different. It requires us to change something that’s not in our wheelhouse necessarily.
The thing is, we know how to heal ourselves. We’ve just forgotten because we’ve also been taught we need a high protein diet, we need meat and we need calcium from milk and cheese.
“What we are putting into our bodies has the ability to heal us or it has the ability to harm us and cause disease.” – Brandi Harvey
Greatness Never Goes on Sale
“You cannot get a discount on greatness – it never goes on sale.” – Brandi Harvey
Think about this the next time you see one of those insta-quick diets or weight loss solutions. You know the ones – the 8-minute abs or 14-day diet or 21-day challenge. These things are not going to solve your problem. Sure, you may lose weight, but you’ll gain it right back when something triggers you emotionally.
Emotional weight, mental weight, spiritual weight – it’s all connected to your physical weight.
“When I talk about losing weight, I’m not talking about shedding pounds to fit into skinny jeans. No, this is about shedding the weight of life.” – Brandi Harvey
Many of us want those quick-fixes, but until we make the switch in our mind that it’s not about the physical weight – it’s about what caused the weight – then we stay stagnant or we lose weight and then gain it back.
The Beauty of Silence
Brandi started her health journey at 19 and now she’s 37. If anything, those 18 years have taught her that physical shape is only one part of the equation.
As she says, “Until I got my mind and spirit in shape, I had to distance myself and disconnect. I had to get silent. I had to get uncomfortable in order to find out who I really was, and I had to understand that I couldn’t live life for somebody else.”
“Focus on your mental health – that’s when the total shift happens and your life opens up.” – Brandi Harvey
We owe ourselves silence because through silence, our goals become clear.

She helps emerging and established women influencers of faith to Believe Bigger, Live Bigger and Profit Bigger so that they can ultimately Give Bigger.
Featured regularly on CNN, Fox Business and ESPN, Marshawn’s client roster includes HP, Home Depot, Ernst & Young, Delta, Tiffany & Co., Nike, Rolls Royce and NFL & NBA Athlete. She’s also the best-selling author of SKIRTS in the Boardroom and BELIEVE BIGGER: Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose.
Marshawn’s philosophy is – “If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space.”
Purpose Is Not a Checklist
Believe Bigger is about discovering the path to your life’s purpose and one of my favorite parts of the book is when Marshawn says,
“I’m not here to help you find your purpose. I’m here to help you become more aware of it.” – Marshawn Evans Daniels
Purpose is the natural impact and presence your life is meant to have on others. This is the crux of why we are here.
For Marshawn, to understand her purpose, it took her needing to be in the trenches with people rather than speaking to them from a stage. Most of us, she says, try to look at our lives through our own lens or through the lens of what other people say and that doesn’t get to the core of our purpose.
“Purpose is not about platform or reach or fame. It’s about how you’re designed to make the lives of other people better.” – Marshawn Evans Daniels
Think about purpose like this: What is it about you that if you never got a paycheck or no one ever saw or heard your name you’d do just because it’s you? Purpose, in other words, is more about personality than profession.
Calling Is Your Assignment
Calling is a specific assignment. You can think of it as a specific mission or objective and throughout life you will have multiple assignments.
You should look at calling as a seasonal assignment and ask yourself, “What am I being assigned or called to do for this season?” Also, realize it might change. This is where obedience and being open to and aware of God’s voice is absolutely imperative because you might plant roots in soil that God only intended you to plant seeds in.
Gifts – Your God Endowments
Think about gifts as you would superpowers because your gifts are your superpowers. These are the things God has deposited within you and they’re exclusive to you.
Our gifts give us clues about our assignments and when we understand our purpose in terms of our personality and essence then we can show up uniquely. For this reason, there’s nobody else on the planet like you.
There might be multiple people who talk about messaging and branding, but nobody does it the way Marshawn does. They can’t – it’s just not possible. Or take me for example. There are many people who talk about money, but nobody talks about it in exactly the same way I do.
“When we don’t understand that we’re purpose-made, we start to compete and live beneath our calling.” – Marshawn Evans Daniels
Our gifts, in other words, are great clues to where we’re supposed to be and who we’re supposed to become – we just have to be open to and aware of them.
Do you know what your gifts are? How do they align with your calling and purpose? Please share with us and let us know your biggest takeaways.

Olanikee Osi: What’s Wrong With Being Selfish?
Thursday Sep 19, 2019
Thursday Sep 19, 2019
If I asked you to define what it means to practice self-care and self-love what would you say? The key to all “practices” is you decide what they mean for you. For example, my definition of self-care could be wildly different from yours and neither of us would be wrong.
When I sat down with Vanessa White, known as Olanikee Osi, the CEO and Founder of Goddess Detox Inc., and SelfishBabe, I asked her to define self-care, self-love and what it means to be selfish. I also asked her why she thought so many women struggle with the idea of being selfish and asked her what we could do to change that.
Listen in as Olanikee and I dive into the topic of selfishness and discover new ways you can embrace “being selfish” to enhance your self-care, self-love and overall health and wellness.
This episode is brought to you by the Selfish Babe app, the place women can turn to to learn how to selfishly and authentically love themselves as well as a place to turn to for self-love resources. DOWNLOAD NOW:

About Olanikee (Ola-Nee-Kay)
Olanikee is the CEO and Founder of both Goddess Detox Inc. and SelfishBabe – two brands dedicated to self-love.
She’s a self-love manifestor who helps women around the world, including herself, develop ways to love themselves by being more selfish and authentic in their lives. She also believes if you truly want something you can get it – you just have to make it happen.
How Do You Define Selfish?
As women, many of us struggle too much with the idea of being selfish. But one of the things I believe most is that nothing has meaning except for the meaning we assign it.
For example, when people think about the word selfish, they often think of it in terms of lacking consideration for others. This is what you’d find in the dictionary. But I always encourage people to go deeper, and when I thought about what it meant to be selfish, I saw concern for one’s own personal profit or pleasure.
“Being selfish is about being honest with yourself and truly loving yourself. Self-love is selfish.” – Olanikee Osi
Olanikee believes too many women struggle with the idea of being selfish because society tells us as women that we need to be taking care of others in order to feel fulfilled. In other words, we’re taught to nurture other people like we would the baby dolls so many of us grew up caring for.
Be Unapologetically Selfish
Self-love is about more than going to the nail salon or spending an hour in the bath. It’s about your mindset, and it’s about understanding and committing to putting yourself first.
For the SelfishBabe app, Olanikee knew she wanted to create something where women could feed their mind and change their mindsets. She wanted to motivate them and give them the push they needed to take action on their ideas.
“Me choosing myself is going to be the best decision for both of us.” – Olanikee Osi
Many of you know my story – how I lost everything in the recession and ended up sleeping on my brother’s couch. But what you don’t know is a couple of years later he needed to borrow money and I said no.
My family couldn’t believe it, but I knew what I was being called to do and I knew if let him borrow all the money I’d saved, I wouldn’t be able to do the things I needed to do.
In other words, had I not taken that moment to be selfish and to put myself first, then I would have let myself down. And people may not get it in the moment, but it’s not for them to get. It’s for us to start to stand up and be unapologetically selfish.
This Ain’t Ya Mama’s Self Help
The SelfishBabe app uses choice language, but what I always tell people is, “You can’t miss the message because you get caught up in the minutia.” For me, I love my Christian music, but I also love my Snoop Dogg – to me, the app is a bit like that.
It’s a safe space for young women and it meets them where they are in life and in a way that feels good for them.
Olanikee agrees and said she created the app the way she did because personal development doesn’t have to look any one way. She wanted it to feel like your friend was talking to you, and wanted it to be relatable, fun and something that would get you engaged.
“The SelfishBabe app is the home-girl who’s going to boost you up and be real with you at the same time.” – Olanikee Osi
SelfishBabes are learning to selfishly love themselves. They get daily affirmations sent to their phone and whether they say them out loud or not, they read them and that plays into the subconscious mind telling them they can do this.
Are you ready to be more selfish? What’s one thing you would do right now for yourself? Share with us in the comments.
